Soon Hee Newbold was born on November 11, 1974, in Seoul, South Korea. She was adopted as an infant by American parents and raised in Frederick, Maryland. She has two sisters. Displaying exceptional musical ability from a young age, Newbold began playing the piano at five and took up the violin by age seven. Her early dedication to music led her to win multiple prestigious competitions as a young concert performer.
Newbold's musical accomplishments afforded her numerous opportunities as a soloist with professional orchestras around the world. She performed at renowned venues including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Wolf Trap, Disney World, the Aspen Music Festival and School, and Tanglewood. These appearances highlighted her evolving reputation as a gifted violinist and composer.
Newbold attended Frederick High School before enrolling at James Madison University, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree. Her formal training and academic background further strengthened her skills as both a performer and music educator.
In addition to her music career, Soon Hee Newbold explored acting. She made her film debut in "The Waterboy," a 1998 sports comedy starring Adam Sandler. While acting was a secondary pursuit, this experience added another dimension to her creative portfolio.
Soon Hee Newbold resides in California with her husband, Erin Michael Rettig. The couple married in 1996 and have remained active in various professional and personal endeavors. Newbold continues to contribute to the music community through composing, conducting, and educational outreach.
