Emmanuel Hostin

Hostin narrated the story of how she met Dr. Hostin. She says she views him as the love of her life and recounts how she fell for him. “I remember seeing him for the first time when I was quite young. He was a decent looking person, unlike many other guys our age. I had just started working as a journalist and as far as I can remember, he was still in medical school” she said. “We belonged in completely different fields, so meeting each other by chance was out of question. It was our mutual friend who took us on a double date. I went with my girlfriend and Emmanuel was with his guy friend. So, we met with the help of our friends. “And as soon as I saw him with his friend, something just felt right” Hostin said jokingly. “I knew he was the one, so I asked my friend to arrange yet another date with him. He seemed very shy at first. It was that second date that brought us together. After that, there was no looking back.”

She further added: “I couldn’t have found a more loving and brilliant person in my life. If I hadn’t gone on that double date, I would have never known him. I am extremely lucky to have a husband like him. He is a darling and has given me two beautiful angels. He is always there to support me in my good and bad days. Without him I would have been nothing.”

After the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Emmanuel Hostin traveled there a few times on medical relief missions. The description of the devastation is heart breaking, but at the same time, inspiring: “All around, the grounds had the atmosphere of a bustling village. Young men approached visitors to offer translation services. Workers used wheelbarrows to transport people and wheelchairs to deliver supplies. One medical team or another - among the dozens that helped at the hospital - always seemed to be arriving or going home. Spanish volunteers handled clean water. The Canadians looked after "the forest," a shaded area where patients lay in the open surrounded by their families. A Haitian administrator said there were 300 patients. But a glance around the grounds showed many more. One doctor said the ER alone had seen 250 people in one day. At any one time…about 1,000 patients were being treated in the tents.”

Emmanuel did what he could for the people of Haiti who were appreciative of his efforts. In an effort to repay the doctor, the people often gave him needlepoints. Hostin’s wife says: “He did whatever he could and most people could not pay him. These needlepoint’s are often some of the most expensive things people owned, for them to give these to my husband was incredibly meaningful. They are priceless." The couple proudly displays the needlepoints in their home.

The Hostins co-own the restaurant Alvin & Friends with Alvin Clayton in New Rochelle, New York, which specializes in contemporary cuisine of southern and Caribbean flavors. The Hostin couple has two children, son Gabriel and daughter Paloma
