Esai Morales or Esai Manuel Morales was born on October 1, 1962 in Puerto Rico. His parents are Iris Margarita and Esai Morales, Sr. His parents divorced when he was just a baby and he remained to live with his mother. She did not approve her son’s desire of pursuing an acting career. This was one of the reasons why Esai Morales left home.While he was living in a group home, Morales attended New York School for the Performing Arts and had his first debut at the New York Shakespeare Festival. He played in The Tempest and El Hermano at the Ensemble Theater in New York.
Acting Debut
From his early career, there are a few plays that need to be mentioned: Salome (he played with AL Pacino), The Exonerated and Tamer of Horses. Morales musical theater debut was on The Mambo Kings in San Francisco.
One of the most memorable movies he took part in was the crime drama Bad Boys (1983). It brought him to the public’s attention and became a model for everybody who wanted to ever play an angry Latino character. Because he played that part so well, he found trouble in getting other roles that do not implied ethnic stereotyping. Between 2001 and 2005 he played Lt. Tony Rodriguez in NYPD Blue. In 2002 he was part of the American Family, and in 2006 was a cast member of Jericho.In 2015 he played in the TV series Blue Bloods as Sgt. Trey Delgado.
