Ethan Cutkosky is an American actor best known for his role as Carl Gallagher on the Showtime television series Shameless. He was born on August 19, 1999, in St. Charles, Illinois. Cutkosky began his career in entertainment at the age of four, modeling in photo advertisements. His early exposure to the camera led to his first film role at the age of seven, when he appeared alongside Vince Vaughn in the holiday movie Fred Claus, which was filmed in Chicago.
In 2009, Cutkosky expanded his film portfolio by working with acclaimed actor Gary Oldman in the supernatural horror movie The Unborn. These early performances paved the way for his future success in television.
Later in 2009, Ethan Cutkosky was cast as Carl Gallagher in the U.S. adaptation of Shameless. Carl is portrayed as one of the younger members of the Gallagher family, growing up in a dysfunctional household led by his negligent and alcoholic father, Frank Gallagher, played by William H. Macy. Emmy Rossum played Fiona Gallagher, Carl’s older sister who assumes the role of the family's primary caregiver.
Though Shameless is set in Chicago’s South Side, filming largely took place in and around Los Angeles. The show became a major success, becoming Showtime’s longest-running scripted series after being renewed for its ninth season. The series is also known for its use of indie rock music, with its theme song, “The Luck You Got,” performed by The High Strung.
