George Lazenby is an Australian actor and former model best known for portraying Ian Fleming's iconic British secret agent, James Bond, in the film On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
George Robert Lazenby was born on September 5, 1939, in Goulburn, New South Wales, Australia, to Sheila Joan (née Bodel) and George Edward Lazenby. After completing school, he served briefly in the Australian Army before venturing into various occupations, including work as an auto mechanic, used car salesman, and prestige car salesman.
In 1964, Lazenby relocated to London, England, where he began working as a male model. His modeling career quickly gained traction, and he became one of the highest-paid models in Europe during the 1960s. This rising profile would eventually open the door to his acting career.
In 1968, despite having no formal acting training or significant acting credits, Lazenby secured the titular role of James Bond in the 1969 film On Her Majesty's Secret Service. At 29 years old, he became the youngest actor to portray the legendary secret agent. His only prior screen appearances were in television commercials and a minor role in a 1965 Italian-made parody film.
Lazenby impressed producers during the audition process with his athleticism, charisma, and a choreographed fight scene in his screen test. These qualities, along with his striking resemblance to Sean Connery, who had recently vacated the role, helped him land the part. Despite being a newcomer, filmmakers believed he embodied the qualities necessary to continue the success of the James Bond franchise.
