Early Life and Athletic Family Background
Gianluigi Buffon was born in 1978 in Italy into a family of athletes. His mother, Maria Stella, was a discus thrower, and his father, Adriano, was a weightlifter. After retiring from their respective sports careers, both parents became physical education teachers. Buffon’s athletic heritage extends to his siblings as well—his sisters, Guendalina and Veronica, have played volleyball at the national level for Italy. His uncle, Dante Masocco, was a professional basketball player in Serie A1 and represented Italy internationally. Buffon is a practicing Catholic.

Club Career and Rise to Prominence
Buffon began his professional club career with Parma in 1995, making his Serie A debut at just 17 years old. He quickly established himself as a promising young goalkeeper, earning a starting role and helping the club secure multiple titles. In the 1998–1999 season, he won the Coppa Italia, Supercoppa Italiana, and the UEFA Cup with Parma, solidifying his reputation as one of the most talented young players in Italian football.
Record Transfer to Juventus and Continued Success
In 2001, Buffon transferred from Parma to Juventus for a then-world record fee for a goalkeeper, valued at €52 million (approximately $53 million).
