American actress, writer, and musician Gina L. Gershon was born on June 10, 1962, in Los Angeles, California. She is the youngest of three children in a Jewish family. Her father, Stan Gershon, was a businessman, and her mother, Mickey Gershon, worked as an interior designer. Gina has an older sister, Tracy Gershon, and a brother named Dan Gershon.
Gershon began her education at Collier Street Elementary School and later attended Woodland Hills Academy. She completed her secondary education at Beverly Hills High School, graduating in 1980. That same year, she enrolled at Emerson College in Boston before later transferring to New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts to pursue acting more seriously.
Gina Gershon began her performing career in her teenage years. At age 22, she appeared in the music video "Hello Again" by the rock band The Cars. Her film debut came in the 1986 romantic comedy-drama Pretty in Pink. This was followed by a role in Sweet Revenge (1987).
In 1988, Gershon appeared in two major films: the comedy-drama Cocktail, starring Tom Cruise, and the action film Red Heat alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger. These early roles helped establish her presence in Hollywood.
Between 1988 and 1995, Gershon appeared in a series of supporting roles in films including Suffering Bastards (1989), Voodoo Dawn (1990), Out for Justice (1991), City of Hope (1991), and The Player (1992). She also had guest appearances in various television shows such as The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd (1989), Monsters (1989), Cop Rock (1990), Miss Rose White (1992), Melrose Place (1993), and The Untouchables (1994).
In 1995, Gershon landed a lead role in the martial arts action film Best of the Best 3: No Turning Back. That same year, she gained wider recognition for her role in the erotic drama Showgirls, produced by Carolco Pictures, in which she portrayed a strong-willed bisexual performer. While the film was critically panned, earning her a Golden Raspberry Award nomination for Worst Supporting Actress, it also increased her visibility. The magazine Maxim later ranked her #23 on its Hot 100 Women list.
Her true breakout performance came in 1996 with the lead role in the neo-noir crime thriller Bound, where she played Corky, an ex-con. The role earned her a Saturn Award nomination for Best Actress and an MTV Movie Award nomination for Best Kiss. In 1997, she starred in the box office hit Face/Off alongside John Travolta and Nicolas Cage. The film grossed nearly $250 million worldwide and solidified Gershon's status in the industry.
