Career

She started singing with her siblings at the age of 8, calling themselves "the Pips." The group opened for R&B legends during the 1950s, at that point made a move for Motown to become stars of popular music. As Gladys Knight and the Pips, they recorded their signature tune, "Midnight Train to Georgia."

With youthful talent of Gladys providing the throaty vocals and the Pips giving great harmonies and performances, the band before long earned a following on the "Chitlin Circuit" in the South, opening for mainstream acts like Jackie Wilson and Sam Cooke.
