After a two-year hiatus from acting in films, Gong Yoo returned in 2013 with the action thriller The Suspect, in which he played an elite North Korean spy who defects after betrayal by his homeland. That same year, he was appointed as a special representative for UNICEF Korea during the 24th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. In this role, Gong Yoo visited various countries to raise awareness about the challenges facing children in underdeveloped regions.
