Gregg Marshall

Gregg Marshall was born on 27th February 1963 in Greenwood. He studied at Cave Spring HS for his high school education which is located in Roanoke, Virginia. He completed him high school education in 1981. He went to Randolph- Macon College for his graduation. He completed Bachelor of Arts in business and economics in the year 1985. In 1987, he got his master’s degree from Richmond University in sport management.

He was an assistant during his college days in Randolph- Macon College from the years 1985-1987. After that he was assistant at Belmont Abbey College during the season of 1987-88. After that he was working under John Kresse from 1988 to 1996 at College of Charleston. The program received an at large berth in the NCAA tournament in 1994 and invitations from NIT in 1995 and 1996. He served as assistant coach at Marshall University from 1996 to 1998. In the year 1998, he became head coach at the Winthrop University. He led the Winthrop Eagles Men’s Basketball team to 7 NCAA tournaments.

He compiled a record of 19-8 during the first season of Winthrop during 1998-99. The team won the Big South Conference Tournament which led them to earn first bid to NCAA in school history. He led the team to win six titles during his 9 seasons. The team won during the years: 1999, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007. Along with that, the team also won “Big South Tournament” titles during the years 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006 and 2007 plus six 20-win seasons.  He was named as the Big South Coach of the Year 4 times. He was the first coach whose team was undefeated during the conference play during the year 2006-07. In 2006, he was also about to coach at College of Charleston. However later he changed his mind. He accepted the offer to coach “Wichita State Shockers men’s basketball” team at “Wichita State University” on 14th April 2007.

The team won NIT championship during the fourth season at WSU by defeating Alabama in the final game. Wichita State made first appearance in NCAA tournament in the year 2012. An ESPN ranking named him as one of the best 8 coaches in America. During the season 2013-14, the team performed best in the history of the school. They started a regular season with amazing 30 continuous wins. By the end of the February, they were ranked 2 in the major polls. This was the highest they went since the year 1981. They entered NCAA tournament with a whooping record of 34-0. They started off the tournament with a glorious win over Cal Paly to reach 35-0. They were the first in men’s division to start a season with this record. By the end of the season, they finished off at 35-1 which is really outstanding.

He is married to Lynn Marshall. His wife is very supportive. They have 2 kids together namely Maggie Marshall and Kellen Marshall.
