Hanley Ramrez is a former professional baseball shortstop born in the Dominican Republic and raised in the United States. He played Boston Red Sox, Florida / Miami Marlins, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Cleveland Indians in Major League Baseball (MLB). Ramirez is a three-time All-Star in Major League Baseball and was named Rookie of the Year in the National League in 2006. He played shortstop for most of his career, but he also played first, third, and left field.
Ramrez established himself as an outstanding hitter during his prime years, with a high lifetime batting average (.289) and isolated solid power (.197). However, his poor defensive shortstop performance moved to left field with the Red Sox, where he performed even worse defensively. He was transferred to first base for the 2016 season, and he performed admirably both offensively and defensively. From 2017 on, his hitting dropped, as he had the lowest batting averages and OPS of his MLB career.
Ramrez was born in Samaná, Dominican Republic, on December 23, 1983, to Toribio and Isabela Ramrez. His father worked as a mechanic for autos. Ramrez used to be a huge baseball fan as a kid. He was also a basketball player. While attending Adventista High School in Samaná, he was noticed by MLB scouts. Levy Ochoa, a scout for the Boston Red Sox, signed him in 2000.
Ramrez signed as an international free agent with the Boston Red Sox in July 2000, 16 years old. In 2001, he played for the DSL Red Sox in the Dominican Summer League. He hit.340 with the GCL Red Sox in 2002 and was named to the Gulf Coast League and Rookie League All-Star teams. In 22 games with the Class A Short Season Lowell Spinners that year, he batted.371.
Ramrez batted.275 in 111 games with the Class A Augusta GreenJackets in 2003. He spent time in 2004 between the GCL Red Sox (batting.400 in six games), the Class A-Advanced Sarasota Red Sox (.310 in 62 games), and the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs (.310 in 32 games). Before the 2005 season, Ramrez was ranked as the top prospect in baseball by Baseball America, and he was named an Eastern League All-Star while hitting.271 in 122 games with the Sea Dogs.
On September 20, 2005, Ramrez made his Major League Baseball debut against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, entering the game as a defensive replacement in the bottom of the seventh inning and striking out in his first at-bat against Tim Corcoran in the top of the eighth inning.
Ramrez played in just one more game that season, striking out once more in his lone at-bat.
Ramrez has three children with his wife, Sanoe (Elisabeth). Ramrez enjoys listening to merengue and bachata music, as well as reggae music and DJing. David Ortiz, a former teammate, and fellow Dominican, remains a close buddy. Ramrez was briefly linked to a federal and state investigation into a narcotics operation based out of Lawrence, Massachusetts, in June 2018, shortly after the Red Sox released him. Within days, it was revealed that Ramrez was unrelated to the inquiry and that someone arrested in the case had used his name "to get the cops off his back, which didn't work."
Ramrez became a naturalized US citizen in April of 2019.
