Hariharan "Hari" Sreenivasan was born in 1974 in Mumbai, India, into a Tamil Brahmin family. He moved to the United States at the age of seven and settled in Seattle, Washington. Sreenivasan attended Nathan Hale High School, where he began his broadcasting journey as a radio disc jockey. He later pursued a degree in mass communications with minors in philosophy and political science. During his college years, he interned at several television news stations across Washington State. In 2008, he became a naturalized American citizen.
In 1995, Sreenivasan began his professional journalism career when he was hired full-time by NBC affiliate WNCN-TV in Raleigh, North Carolina. He later moved to San Francisco, California, where he joined CNET to cover the technology sector. His expertise in technology journalism became a defining aspect of his early career.
In 2004, Sreenivasan joined ABC News in New York City as a correspondent. He co-anchored the overnight program World News Now alongside Taina Hernandez and co-hosted the behind-the-scenes podcast ABC News Shuffle with Jake Tapper. In 2009, he joined CBS News at its Dallas bureau before transitioning to PBS later that same year.
In 2009, Sreenivasan began working with the PBS program NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, serving as both an on-air and online correspondent. He provided daily news summaries and managed the program's blog. By 2013, he became the anchor for PBS NewsHour Weekend, broadcast from the Tisch WNET Studio at Lincoln Center in Manhattan.
As a regular anchor, he frequently substituted for co-anchors Judy Woodruff and Gwen Ifill when they were on assignment, helping to maintain consistent coverage and editorial continuity.
