Early Life and Family Background

Hayley Kiyoko Alcroft, known professionally as Hayley Kiyoko, was born in 1991 in Los Angeles, California. She is the daughter of actor and comedian Jamie Alcroft and figure skater and choreographer Sarah Kawahara. Her father is of Irish and English descent and was born in Ohio, while her mother, who is of Japanese ancestry, was born in Canada.

Kiyoko demonstrated strong creative inclinations from a young age. At just six years old, she insisted on learning drums and began writing drum charts of new music releases by age eleven, later selling them to a local music store. She was also active in school leadership, serving as class president in both middle school and her freshman year of high school, vice-president in her senior year, Commissioner of Entertainment during her sophomore year, and Commissioner of Pep Rallies in her junior year.

Entry into Performing Arts

Kiyoko began her career in the entertainment industry early. At age five, during a photo shoot with a friend, she was invited by a director to appear in front of the camera. This led to her being featured in a national print ad for KnowledgeWare. She was later discovered by Nickelodeon at the Culver City Ice Rink and was featured in a short piece titled I’m Hayley, a Skater, which highlighted children involved in sports. During her school years, she continued to participate in various school plays and theatrical performances.

She appeared in national television commercials for companies including Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Slim Jim, and GM OnStar. Her passion for both performance and music remained a consistent focus throughout her childhood and teenage years.

Education and Early Music Endeavors

After graduating high school, Kiyoko was accepted into the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at New York University. Although initially deferring her admission, she eventually declined in favor of pursuing professional opportunities in entertainment.

During high school, she founded and choreographed the Agoura High Step Team, which gained faculty approval as an official school club under her direction. The team went on to win third place at a national competition in 2005.

Acting Career

Kiyoko gained early recognition for her role as Velma Dinkley in the live-action television films Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins and Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster. She later starred as Stella Yamada in the 2011 Disney Channel Original Movie Lemonade Mouth.

She also portrayed Raven Ramirez in the CBS crime drama CSI: Cyber and played a lead role in Girls United, a web series spin-off of the popular drama The Fosters.
