Hezekiah Walker

Career

In 1994, Bishop Walker opened a church with only eight members. He helped drug addicts and prostitutes turn their lives around and accept salvation. He said that he wanted his church in East New York because that was a place that many people have abandoned. This section of New York later experienced a 30% drop in crime in the first year the church was built.

Walker takes a different approach to warn the youth about getting tempted by the finer things in life. He told the New York Times that once kids nowadays watch TV, they get mesmerized by the hip-hop culture of money, riches, and love. They want to experience this lifestyle, but his role in life tells them that there is also a penalty for getting these things easy. He says it's acceptable to desire these things, but they should learn to obtain these things the right way.

Walker has no intentions of changing the way he does things, and he says that he would like to see his ministry expand to a broader market and attract more people who want salvation and want to find righteousness. He says that God's people already know what he wants to say, but he aims to provide it for most people.

Walker lives in a vast mansion that contains 22 rooms, and it is only blocks away from his church in Brooklyn. Walker has a net worth of $8 million. Despite his wealth and success, many people close to him say that he never lost touch with the community he serves. Walker doesn't fear reaching out to drug dealers and convincing them to attend the church. He may be driving a Benz, but you can easily find him cleaning the church floor after services in a pair of sweatpants.

Awards and Recognition

Walker was awarded The Vision Award in 1994. His music video in 1994 won The Stellar Award for Best Music Video. His song, "Love Lifted Me," won The (GMWA) Excellence Award for Contemporary Song of the Year.

On the strength of the CD Love Is Love!, Hezekiah & The LFT Church Choir were nominated for an NAACP Image Award for Best Gospel Artist, Traditional in 2001. Walker has received two Grammy Awards for Best Gospel Album By Choir Or Chorus: once with The Love Fellowship Crusade Choir for Live in Atlanta at Morehouse College (1994) and again with The LFT Church Choir for Love Is Live! (2001).

Walker's LFT Church Choir, separate from The Love Fellowship Crusade Choir, issued two albums: Recorded Live At Love Fellowship Tabernacle in 1998 and "Love Is Live" in 2001. LFT Church Choir was a younger, hip-hop-leaning ensemble than its predecessor, and its album reached the Top 5 on Billboard's Gospel Chart and was nominated for a Grammy Award the following year.
