In 2009, Mitsushima starred in Kakera: A Piece of Our Life, followed in 2010 by notable performances in Sawako Decides and Villain. Both films further solidified her versatility as an actress. The next year, she appeared in Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai and Smuggler. In 2013, she was featured in the movie The End of Summer. Additional notable works include Umibe no Sei to Shi and Kakekomi Onna to Kakedashi Otoko. She took on the lead role in the drama series Still Alive.
Mitsushima starred in the NHK BS Premium drama Pioneers and was honored with the 36th Japan Academy Prize for Best Supporting Actress.
