Howie Kendrick was born on July 12, 1983, in Jacksonville, Florida. From a young age, he demonstrated a strong interest in athletics, particularly baseball. He attended West Nassau High School, where he was a member of the school's baseball team. Despite his passion and dedication to the sport, Kendrick remained relatively unnoticed during his high school years and did not gain national recognition at that time.
Following high school, Kendrick enrolled at St. Johns River Community College (now St. Johns River State College). He continued playing baseball at the collegiate level. Although he delivered solid performances, they initially went largely under the radar. However, in 2002, he caught the attention of scout Tom Kotchman, a former professional player and long-time MLB scout.
