Laurie's career in entertainment began during his time at the University of Cambridge, where he joined the Cambridge Footlights, a renowned theatrical club known for launching the careers of many British comedians and actors. She would later introduce him to Stephen Fry, setting the stage for one of British comedy’s most notable partnerships.

Their performance in The Cellar Tapes helped the group win the Perrier Comedy Award at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. As a result, Laurie, Fry, Thompson, and several others were recruited to write and perform in Alfresco, a sketch show produced by Granada Television.

Laurie and Fry would go on to collaborate on several successful projects, including the Blackadder series.
