He attended St. Joseph Notre Dame High School in Alameda, where, under coach Frank LaPorte, he led his team to two state championships and won the Naismith High School Player of the Year Award. In the 1994 NBA Draft, Kidd was selected second overall by the Dallas Mavericks.
