Jerry Angelo Brooks, professionally known as JB Smoove, was born on December 16, 1965, in Plymouth, North Carolina. He spent his early years in Mount Vernon, New York, where his family moved during his childhood. Smoove later attended Norfolk State University in Virginia, where he studied engineering and graphic design. Before establishing his career in entertainment, he worked at a custom T-shirt shop, where he also developed material for his comedy routines.
JB Smoove began his career in the early 1990s, gaining initial recognition through performances on HBO's Def Comedy Jam. He continued to build his comedy credentials with appearances on shows such as Everybody Hates Chris. His talents led him to join the writing staff of Saturday Night Live, where he worked from 2003 to 2006. His contributions earned him and the team the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Comedy/Variety Series.
Smoove's breakout acting role came in 2007 when he was cast as Leon Black on HBO’s acclaimed comedy series Curb Your Enthusiasm. His recurring performance on the series brought him widespread recognition, and he became one of the show's most beloved characters. He also starred in season three of the FOX sitcom 'Til Death and returned to network television between 2013 and 2015 with a major role in CBS’s The Millers. Additionally, Smoove appeared as a fictionalized version of himself on BET’s improv comedy show Real Husbands of Hollywood.
