Jeff Bezos is an American entrepreneur, investor, and philanthropist who was born on January 22, 1964, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in the United States. His birth name is Jeffrey Preston Jorgensen and his parents are Jacklyn Gise Jorgensen and Ted Jorgensen. Bezos was born while his mother was 17 and still in high school. At the time of his birth, his father was the owner of a bike shop. His mother divorced his father and married a Cuban immigrant named Miguel "Mike" Bezos in 1968. Mike's stepfather officially adopted him and his surname was changed to Bezos. He moved with his parents to Houston, Texas where he attended River Oaks Elementary School. His family moved again, this time to Miami, Florida where he attended Miami Palmetto High School. Bezos went on to attend Princeton University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering and computer science in 1986. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and was also elected to Tau Beta Pi. Bezos began working at a financial telecommunications start-up called Fitel in 1986.
He was promoted to head of development and director of customer service but he switched to the banking industry from 1988 to 1994. Bezos went on to found an online bookstore company called Amazon after leaving D.E. Shaw. In 1993, he married Mackenzie Tuttle who worked as a research associate at D.E. Shaw with him. They moved to Seattle, Washington where Bezos has become known as the richest man in the world thanks to his online company Amazon. Bezos and his wife have four children together but are currently in the process of divorcing.
