Early Life and Education

Jeffrey Pegues was born on March 4, 1974, in Washington, D.C., and was raised in Westport, Connecticut. He attended Miami University in Ohio on a football scholarship in the early 1990s. Although his athletic career was short-lived, Pegues transitioned into journalism, where he found his professional calling.

Career Beginnings and Early Recognition

Early in his journalism career, Pegues worked as a reporter for WBAL-TV in Maryland. He earned an Emmy Award nomination during his time there, which he has described as an encouraging milestone, even though he did not win. This early recognition helped establish his trajectory in broadcast journalism.

Rise at ABC and Transition to CBS News

While working for WABC-TV in New York, Pegues gained widespread attention in 2008 for his coverage of the international custody battle involving David Goldman and his 9-year-old son. His reporting earned him multiple Emmy Awards, solidifying his reputation in the industry.

In 2013, Pegues joined CBS News as a correspondent. Within just four months, he was promoted to Transportation Correspondent. By 2014, he was named CBS News' Justice and Homeland Security Correspondent, a role in which he continues to provide in-depth coverage of law enforcement, national security, and the U.S. Department of Justice.

Author and Advocate for Social Justice

In May 2017, Pegues released his critically acclaimed book Black and Blue: Inside the Divide between the Police and Black America. The book gained national attention for its balanced and well-researched take on the complex relationship between law enforcement and Black communities in the United States.

In an interview with the Star Tribune, Pegues emphasized the need for cooperation between police departments and the communities they serve. He stated, “As my research in Black and Blue points out, part of the solution is getting police and community in a more cooperative relationship. That includes an increase in trust and understanding. In addition, police must be given the resources they need to fight crime. But there must also be a realization that police officers cannot solve these problems alone. There is an economic component to this that is often overlooked.”
