Jerry Reed was known as an American country music singer, guitarist, songwriter, and actor. He is most famous for his appearances in the Smokey and the Bandit film franchise.

Jerry Reed was born on March 20, 1937, in Atlanta, Georgia. His full name is Jerry Reed Hubbard but was known by his performer name, Jerry Reed. He was the second child of Robert and Cynthia Hubbard. During his high school years, Reed was already writing and singing music.

Career and Net Worth

By the time he turned 18, Jerry Reed was signed by record producer Bill Lowery to record his first record titled "If the Good Lord's Willing and the Creek Don't Rise". Reed went on to record both country and rockabilly style singles at Capitol Records. In 1958, Reed signed to the National Recording Corporation and recorded songs as a member of the staff band which featured Joe South and Ray Stevens. Some of his most popular songs include "Guitar Man", "U.S. Male", "A Thing Called Love", "Alabama Wild Man", and "East Bound and Down".

Reed earned the epithet The Guitar Man after his 1967 hit single, which was covered later by Elvis Presley with Reed playing guitar for Elvis. As a collaborative guitar player, Reed's guitar work was likewise heard on hits by top artists like Bobby Bare and Waylon Jennings.

As a songwriter, his arrangements were recorded by musicians like Elvis, Johnny Cash, Porter Wagoner, and Brenda Lee. In 2005, Reed was drafted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 1970, he scored a country music hit with 'Amos Moses.' After one year, he released the Grammy-winning 'When You're Hot, You're Hot.' In the mid 1980s, Reed bested the country charts again with 'She Got the Goldmine (I Got the Shaft)' and lined it up with the No. 2 hit, 'The Bird.'

He also had a successful career as an actor and most notably appeared alongside actor Burt Reynolds in the 1977 film "Smokey and the Bandit". He returned to his role as Cledus Snow in the 1980 sequel "Smokey and the Bandit II" and again in "Smokey and Bandit 3" in 1983. He was also in Adam Sandler's 1998 blockbuster comedy, 'The Waterboy.' His TV appearances included acting roles on the comedy series' 'Alice' and 'Mother's Family. In 1972, he was animated for an appearance in the Saturday morning cartoon series, 'The New Scooby-Doo Movies.'

Reed told the CMT channel that each fantasy he envisioned worked out as expected in his life. He got the chance to compose hit tunes and a chance to go to Hollywood to act in big time films. He was grateful for all the doors that opened for him and all the people he experienced his milestones with.

Marriage, Wife, and Kids

In 1959, Jerry Reed married Priscilla "Prissy" Mitchell. They had two daughters named Seidina Ann Hubbard and Charlotte Elaine Hubbard.

Death

On September 1, 2008, Jerry Reed died at the age of 71 due to complications stemming from emphysema. He spent his last days in a Nashville hospice.
