James Joseph "Jim" Harbaugh was born in Toledo, Ohio. His father, Jack Harbaugh, was a football coach, prompting the family to move frequently. They lived in Ohio, Iowa, Kentucky, California, and Michigan during Jim's childhood. He attended schools in Palo Alto, California, and Ann Arbor, Michigan. Harbaugh later enrolled at the University of Michigan, where he played quarterback for the Wolverines. Under his leadership, the team reached the Rose Bowl, and he finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting.
Harbaugh was selected in the first round of the 1987 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears. He played quarterback in the NFL for 14 seasons, from 1987 to 2000. His tenure included time with the Chicago Bears (1987–1993), Indianapolis Colts (1994–1997), Baltimore Ravens (1998), and San Diego Chargers (1999–2000).
While still playing in the NFL, Harbaugh served as an unpaid assistant coach at Western Kentucky University, working under his father. In 2011, Harbaugh signed a five-year contract as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. He had immediate success, leading the team to the playoffs in each of his first three seasons. The 49ers reached Super Bowl XLVII in 2013, where they were narrowly defeated by the Baltimore Ravens, coached by his brother John Harbaugh. It marked the first time in NFL history that two brothers faced off as head coaches in the Super Bowl.
