Her parents were Elsa Collins, a dance teacher, and Joseph William Collins, a theatrical agent. She has two younger siblings: Jackie Collins, who became a successful novelist, and her brother Bill.
Collins attended the Francis Holland School, an independent girls' school in London. After completing her secondary education, she enrolled at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), where she received formal training in acting.
Joan Collins began her film career at the age of 17 when she signed with the British film studio J. Arthur Rank Film Company. Her early appearances include a small role in the 1951 film Lady Godiva Rides Again, in which she played a beauty contestant.
