Joanne Kelly was born in 1978 in Bay d'Espoir, Newfoundland, Canada, and raised along the southern coast of Labrador and Newfoundland. She attended Acadia University in Nova Scotia, where she began nurturing a serious interest in acting. During her college years, she actively participated in theatre productions and several campus events, developing her skills through local stage performances.
Kelly's professional acting breakthrough came in 2002 with the film The Bay of Love and Sorrows, directed by Tim Southam and based on the novel by David Adams Richards. Her performance was praised by critics, marking her entry into the Canadian film industry. Soon after, she starred opposite Gordon Pinsent in Heyday and alongside Paul Gross in the acclaimed series Slings and Arrows.
