Moore was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. He is the son of John and Irene Moore and grew up in the Mt. Tabor neighborhood. He graduated from Benson Polytechnic High School in 1995. After attending Mt. Hood Community College for two years, Moore transferred to Southern Oregon University in 1998, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2001. During his college years, he participated in the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, nurturing his passion for performance and theater.

Career in Hollywood

Joel David Moore began his acting career with roles in educational and independent projects, including the 1999 short film Drug Wars: The High Times, focused on the dangers of underage drinking. In 2000, Moore relocated to Los Angeles to pursue his career in Hollywood.
