John Mallory Asher was born on January 13, 1971, in California to actor Edward Mallory and actress Joyce Bulifant. Following his parents' separation, his mother married television director William Asher, who legally adopted John. With this adoption, John assumed the full name John Mallory Asher. Growing up in a family deeply involved in the entertainment industry, it was perhaps natural for him to pursue a similar path.

John Mallory Asher began his career in the early 1990s, making his screen debut with a small role in an episode of Beverly Hills, 90210. Over time, he became a recognizable figure in both television and film. He ventured into directing and cinematography early in his career, signaling a strong interest in exploring multiple facets of storytelling in the entertainment industry.
Among his directorial efforts are the feature films Kounterfeit (1996), Diamonds (1999), and the television series Going to California (2001), which further cemented his versatility. In 2004, he expanded into cinematography with the documentary-style project Mating Rituals 101.
Marriage to Jenny McCarthy and Personal Life
Asher married actress and model Jenny McCarthy in 1999. Jenny, who is originally from Chicago, gained prominence as a Playboy Playmate and eventually earned the title of Playmate of the Year. The couple collaborated professionally on the film Dirty Love (2005), which Asher directed and McCarthy wrote and starred in. The film, however, was poorly received and criticized for its content, attracting significant negative publicity. The fallout from the film reportedly contributed to tensions in their relationship, culminating in their divorce in 2005.
The couple has one son, Evan Joseph Asher, who has been publicly diagnosed with autism. Despite the challenges, Asher has remained involved in his son's life. Prior to his marriage to McCarthy, Asher was married to Vanessa Lee Asher from 1994 until their divorce in 1996.
