Early Life and Family Background

Joshua Treadwell McCown was born on July 4, 1979, in Jacksonville, Texas, to parents Pat and Robin McCown. He grew up alongside his brothers, Luke McCown, a former NFL quarterback, and Randy McCown, a former Texas A&M quarterback. Josh attended Jacksonville High School, where he balanced his academic life with time spent working on the family farm. His physical development during high school gave him a competitive edge—by age 16, he had already grown to 5 feet 4 inches, and he experienced a major growth spurt during his junior year. In addition to football, McCown also played basketball and was named to the All-District Second Team as a shooting guard during his senior year.

College Football Career

Josh McCown was selected in the third round of the 2002 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals as the 81st overall pick, making him the fourth quarterback taken that year. He played for the Cardinals from 2002 to 2005.

Over the course of his NFL career, McCown played for nine different teams: the Arizona Cardinals, Detroit Lions, Oakland Raiders, Miami Dolphins (offseason only), Carolina Panthers, Chicago Bears, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cleveland Browns, New York Jets, and the Philadelphia Eagles. In 2019, after initially announcing his retirement and planning to join ESPN as an analyst, McCown signed with the Philadelphia Eagles, wearing jersey number 18.

In total, McCown appeared in 102 NFL games, starting 76 of them. He finished his career with a quarterback rating of 79.7.
