Julian Dana William McMahon was born in July 1968 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. He is the son of Sir William McMahon, a prominent Australian politician who served as Prime Minister of Australia from 1971 to 1972, and Sonia McMahon, a noted social figure known for her charity work and public presence. Julian has two sisters, Melinda and Deborah.
Julian attended Sydney Grammar School for his secondary education. He later enrolled in a law program at the University of Sydney but left before completing his degree due to a lack of interest in academics. Instead, he chose to pursue a career in modeling and acting. This career shift caused tension between Julian and his father, leading to a prolonged period of estrangement.
Julian began his professional career as a model, working with major brands such as Levi Strauss in various international campaigns. His modeling work helped him transition into acting, and in 1989 he made his television debut in the Australian soap opera Home and Away.
He made his film debut in the 1992 movie Wet and Wild Summer. Julian went on to appear in several films and television shows, including Another World, In Quiet Night, Chasing Sleep, Another Day, and Profiler. He gained further recognition for his role in the television series Charmed.
McMahon’s most notable role came with the American medical drama series Nip/Tuck, where he played Dr. Christian Troy. The show was a commercial and critical success, receiving over 45 awards including a Golden Globe and an Emmy. Julian also portrayed the character Doctor Doom in the Fantastic Four films and lent his likeness to the corresponding video game adaptation.
