Julianna Peña was born on August 19, 1989 in Spokane, Washington. Her older sister is former KREM 2 journalist and morning/early afternoon meteorologist Grace Pena. She was intrigued by martial arts and fighting from an extremely youthful age. She graduated from Mt. Spokane High School at 18 years old in 2007. She at that point joined Spokane Community College, located in the place where she grew up where she finished her further education.
At 20 years old, she made a professional MMA debut in May 2009. She won 4 battles consecutively. Her battle against Shayna Baszler and her rebound earned her a "Rebound of the Year" award in 2013.
Julianna Pena made her Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) debut on November 30, 2013, when she battled Jessica Rakoczy in the finals at The Ultimate Fighter 18 Finale where she won by TKO in the last seconds of the first round. On the show, she had a close friendship with her coach Miesha Tate. Miesha and Pena knew each other before the show started because she was already training at Tate's gym. When it came time to select teams, Tate was delighted that she was able to choose her friend to be on her team. Ronda Rousey was the coach of the other team and intentionally chose to ignore Pena as a team member choice because she knew of the friendship that she had with Tate, her hated rival.
