Justina Machado is an American actress best known for her role as Darci Factor in the CW show Jane the Virgin. Justina Machado was born on September 6, 1972, in Chicago, Illinois, and is of Puerto Rican descent. After graduating high school, Machado worked with the Latino Chicago Theater Company. She moved to Los Angeles in 1996 and it was there that she landed her first acting roles. Machado received a Screen Actors Award in 2004 for her part in the ensemble cast of HBO’s television series Six Feet Under. She is most recently appearing in the reboot of the Norman Lear series One Day at a Time on Netflix. The show, which is currently shooting its third season, follows three generations of a Cuban-American family and features Machado in the role of Penelope Alvarez, a single mom and military veteran. This modern spin-off tackles modern issues facing Latino families such as PTSD, being undocumented, sexual identity, and voting. Machado believes that if the show is successful that it will open the door for more Latino shows and that it will bring more work to the Latino community
