Kandi Burruss began her career with Xscape in the early 1990s. The group gained national attention with their debut album, Hummin' Comin' at 'Cha, and went on to release multiple successful records before disbanding in 1999. Following the group’s dissolution, Burruss teamed up with fellow Xscape member Tameka "Tiny" Cottle to write hit songs for other artists.
Kandi co-wrote TLC’s chart-topping single “No Scrubs,” which earned her a Grammy Award. She also penned hits such as Destiny’s Child’s “Bills, Bills, Bills” and Pink’s “There You Go,” solidifying her status as a leading figure in songwriting. In 2000, she became the first African American woman to win the ASCAP Songwriter of the Year Award, acknowledging her contributions to several top songs that year.
Burruss expanded her career into reality television when she joined The Real Housewives of Atlanta in its second season in 2009. That same year, she released her first extended play, Fly Above EP. Although she initially signed a record deal to release a full studio album, the deal was later canceled. In 2010, she independently released her second studio album, Kandi Koated.
Her on-screen presence extended beyond RHOA. Burruss starred in multiple spin-off series, including The Kandi Factory, Kandi's Wedding, and Kandi’s Ski Trip. She also made guest appearances in shows like Thicker Than Water, Single Ladies, and Let’s Stay Together.
In addition to her entertainment career, Kandi is a successful entrepreneur. She founded Bedroom Kandi, a luxury sex toy and intimate lifestyle brand, which has grown into a multimillion-dollar enterprise. Her business ventures also include Kandi Koated Entertainment and several Atlanta-based hospitality establishments.
Kandi Burruss has built a multi-faceted career that spans music, television, and entrepreneurship.
