Kate Mara made her film debut in 1999's Random Hearts, directed by Sydney Pollack and co-starring Harrison Ford and Kristin Scott Thomas. That same year, she appeared in Joe the King, which won an award at the Sundance Film Festival. She later featured in the critically praised 2002 film Tadpole, alongside Sigourney Weaver.
She starred in Peoples (2004), a coming-of-age drama filmed in Louisville, Kentucky. In 2005, she appeared in Urban Legends: Bloody Mary, a direct-to-video horror feature, and joined Noah Wyle and Illeana Douglas in The Californians. Also in 2005, her supporting role in the Academy Award-winning film Brokeback Mountain—where she played the daughter of Heath Ledger’s character—brought her broader recognition.
In 2007, she appeared in the comedy Full of It, later retitled Big Liar on Campus for television. That year also saw her star opposite Mark Wahlberg in Shooter, a thriller about a retired marksman drawn back into duty. Mara played Sarah Fenn, a Southern widow, for which she adopted a regional accent.
Kate Mara has been in a relationship with actor Max Minghella since 2010. She is known for following a vegetarian diet and credits regular exercise for maintaining her fitness and well-being.
Growing up in a sports-centric family, Mara is a devoted fan of both the New York Giants and the Pittsburgh Steelers, owing to her family’s historical connections to both teams. She has joked, “If I’m mad at my mom, I root for the Giants, and if I’m mad at my dad, I root for the Steelers.” This intersection of sports and entertainment also played a role in her casting in the 2006 sports drama We Are Marshall.
