Her mother, Elisabeth Magnarelli, is the vice president of a Boston management firm and her father is a medical geneticist at the University at Buffalo. Kathryn completed her college graduation from New York University in 1989.

Kathryn got married in 1993 to Terry Kinney, who is also an actor and director. Terry is one of the co-founders of the Steppen Wolf Company. As a member of Steppenwolf Company, she starred in a 1997 production ‘A Streetcar Named Desire,’ directed by husband Terry. In the play, she starred Stella opposite Stanley and Mitch. They also worked together on the HBO prison drama, 'Oz'. Kathryn is a very loving mother of two children named Carson Lincoln and Maeve Elisabeth. She said that being a mother brought a lot of change to her life. The family has a dog called Lilah. She says that it is good for children to grow along with pets.

In the film, 'Worst Friends', she appeared as Sam's mother. She appeared in a comedy sketch when she showed up on 'Last Week Tonight' parodying her role in 'Law and Order'. Recently, she appeared in a TV series called 'Elementary'.
