Lalah Hathaway is an American singer who was born on December 16, 1968, in Chicago, Illinois, in the United States. Her birth name is Eulaulah Donyll Hathaway but developed the nickname "Lalah". She is the daughter of Eulaulah Hathaway and soul singer Donny Hathaway who died in 1979 after falling from a hotel in New York City, New York. Hathaway attended The Chicago Academy for the Arts before going on to attend Berklee College of Music. During her time in college in 1989, Hathaway released her first song "Inside the Beat" after being signed by Virgin Records.
A year later, she recorded her self-titled debut album which debuted at number 191 on the Billboard Hot 200 in 1990. The album featured the hit singles "Heaven Knows", "Baby Don't Cry", and "It's Somethin'". Hathway released her EP album "Night & Day" in 1991 which featured the single "Love Like This". Hathaway went on to collaborate with other major recording artists such as Mary J. Blige, Marcus Miller, and Take 6. In 2014, Hathaway won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance with Snarky Puppy for the song "Something". She has continued to release albums with her most recent being in 2017 and titled "Honestly".
