Laurie Oakes is a former Australian journalist who was born in 1943 on August 14th. Most of his career, from 1969 to 2017 was spent at the Canberra Press Gallery usually covering the parliament elections for a variety of media formats including print, radio and television. Born in New South Wales, to his mother Hazel and father Wes, he ended up going to the University of Sydney while still working at the Sydney Daily Mirror.
While only 25 years old he became the Melbourne Sun’s Canberra Bureau Chief and started doing political commentaries for a television program in the 1970’s called Willesee at Seven. He continued his contributions, especially in the political realm up until his retirement in 2017. He personally considers himself in the middle on the political sprectrum, even though he had a lot of sway and pull because he was so involved with the public media on political related news. He has won many awards, including the Walkley and Graham Perkin awards.
