Layne Staley was an American musician and actor who was born on August 22, 1967, in Kirkland, Washington, in the United States. His full name is Layne Rutherford Staley and he was born to his parents Phillip Blair Staley and Nancy Elizabeth Staley. When he was 2-years-old, he would sing his favorite song, "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" even though he couldn't say the lyrics. Growing up, Staley hated his middle name and would get angry if someone called Rutherford. He was a fan of Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee and when he was a teenager he legally changed his middle name to Thomas. When he was seven, Staley's parents divorced and he was raised by his mother and stepfather from then on. He attended Meadowdale High School in Lynnwood, Washington. At age 12, Staley began learning to the play the drums inspired by bands like Motley Crue, Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple. During his teenage years, he played in several bands and had developed a passion for singing.
He went on to found the band called Sleze with fellow high school students in 1984. The group changed their name to Alice N' Chains in 1986 and got their start playing in the Seattle area. Their song "Again" was nominated for Best Hard Rock Performance at the Grammys. Staley was engaged to Demri Lara Parrott but she died of a drug overdose in 1996. On April 19, 2002, Staley was found dead in his Seattle apartment surrounded by spray-paint cans, cocaine, and drug paraphernalia.
