Leslie Nielsen was as Canadian actor, comedian, and producer who is known for his deadpan comedic style; throughout his long career, Nielsen appeared in over one hundred films and one hundred and fifty television programs. Leslie William Nielsen was born on February 11, 1926, in Regina, Saskatchewan; his father, Ingvard Eversen Nielsen was a constable in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. After graduating high school, Leslie joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and trained as an aerial gunner during World War ll, but he was too young to be sent overseas. Leslie enrolled at the Lorne Greene Academy of Radio Arts in Toronto where he received a scholarship to The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York City. His first television appearance came in 1950 on an episode of Studio One.
His role in the 1950’s film Forbidden Planet led to other movie roles in films such as Ransom! (1956), The Opposite Sex (1956), and Hot Summer Night (1957). However, it was the 1980’s film Airplane that made Leslie Nielsen a household name. The film was a parody of disaster films and was based on building comedy around dramatic actors. In 2008, the American Film Institute included Airplane! in its list of the top ten comedy films of all time.
