Lil Jon

Lil Jon is known as a rapper, producer, DJ, and actor. He is most famous for creating the hip hop sub-genre of crunk and for being the inspiration for one the greatest comedy skits on Comedy Central’s Chappelle’s Show.

Background

Lil Jon was born on January 17, 1971 in Atlanta, Georgia. In the wake of graduating from Frederick Douglass High School in Atlanta, he studied for a long time at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

At that point came back to Atlanta, where he started showing up as a DJ at hip hop dance clubs. He worked for quite a while at the Atlanta-based record label So Def Recordings, where he took in the music business from the back to front as a record agent and producer.

Background

After working at a record label in Atlanta, Jon became the lead rapper of the hip hop group, Lil Jon and The Eastside Boyz from 1997 to 2004. He started an acting career in 2010, and has appeared on TV shows like The Celebrity Apprentice.

He was one of the originators of a hip hop style called "crunk," a Southern-based branch of rap that combines drum-machine thumps, electronic beats, and vocal serenades.
