Lil Jon is known as a rapper, producer, DJ, and actor. He is most famous for popularizing the hip hop sub-genre of crunk and for inspiring one of the most iconic comedy sketches on Comedy Central’s Chappelle’s Show.
Lil Jon was born Jonathan Smith on January 17, 1971, in Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated from Frederick Douglass High School in Atlanta, where he was involved in the marching band. He later attended and studied at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for a time before returning to Atlanta.
Upon his return to Atlanta, Lil Jon began performing as a DJ at various hip hop dance clubs. He soon joined the ranks of So So Def Recordings, an Atlanta-based label founded by Jermaine Dupri. While at So So Def, Lil Jon gained invaluable experience in the music industry, working both behind the scenes as a producer and as a record executive.
In 1997, Lil Jon became the frontman of the group Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz. The group was active until 2004 and became known for energetic party anthems and club hits. They were instrumental in leading the crunk movement—a Southern-offshoot of hip hop characterized by heavy basslines, aggressive chants, and club-oriented beats.
As a pioneer of crunk music, Lil Jon played a formative role in shaping Southern hip hop in the early 2000s. The genre is marked by its use of drum machine rhythms, synthesizer effects, and shouted call-and-response vocals. With songs like “Get Low” and “Yeah!” (with Usher and Ludacris), Lil Jon brought crunk into the mainstream, influencing countless artists and producers.
In addition to his music career, Lil Jon expanded into television and acting. He began appearing in TV shows in the 2000s and notably competed on NBC’s The Celebrity Apprentice in 2011 and again in 2013. His charismatic personality and catchphrases also inspired popular culture moments, including a well-known parody on Chappelle’s Show.
