Lorenzo Cain was born in 1986 and grew up in Madison, Florida. His father passed away when Cain was just four years old, leaving his mother, Patricia, to raise him and his brother while working at a printing company in Madison. Unlike many professional athletes, Cain did not begin playing organized baseball until his sophomore year at Madison County High School. He initially tried out for the basketball team but was not selected, which led him to explore baseball—despite not even owning a glove at the time.
Cain was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 17th round of the 2004 MLB Draft while attending Tallahassee Community College in Florida. He began his professional career in 2005 with the Rookie League teams, the Helena Brewers and the Arizona League Brewers.
In 2006, Cain was promoted to the Class A West Virginia Power and earned selection to both the mid-season and post-season South Atlantic League All-Star Teams. The following year, he moved up to the Class A-Advanced Brevard County Manatees. During the 2008 season, Cain started with Brevard County before being promoted to Triple-A Nashville Sounds on June 10 to replace Hernan Iribarren. He was later called up to the Milwaukee Brewers.
Cain made his Major League debut in 2010 with the Milwaukee Brewers, entering a game against the Atlanta Braves as a pinch-hitter. His first potential hit was taken away by a diving catch from Braves’ left fielder Matt Diaz. That same season, the Brewers traded Cain, along with three other players, to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for pitcher Zack Greinke.
