Luis Guzmán was born in 1956 in Cayey, Puerto Rico. Although born in Puerto Rico, he was raised in Greenwich Village and the surrounding Lower East Side neighborhood of New York City. His mother, Rosa, worked in a hospital, while his stepfather, Benjamin Cardona, was employed as a TV repairman. Before beginning his acting career, Guzmán worked as a social worker, which he has credited as foundational in developing his understanding of human behavior—a trait that later enriched his acting roles.
Luis Guzmán is an accomplished actor recognized for his versatile performances in television and film. Often cast in supporting roles such as policemen, thugs, and sidekicks, Guzmán has demonstrated remarkable staying power in Hollywood. He has notably collaborated with director Steven Soderbergh in films such as Traffic, The Limey, and Out of Sight, as well as with Paul Thomas Anderson in Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and Punch-Drunk Love.
In addition to his film work, Guzmán has lent his voice to video games, portraying Ricardo Diaz in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories. On television, he has appeared in several notable roles, including in the HBO series How to Make It in America. More recently, he starred as senior nurse Jesse "Mama" Salander in the CBS medical drama Code Black.
