The family sought refuge at a hotel in Zadar, where they spent much of Luka’s early childhood. It was during this time that Modrić began playing football, often with other refugee children. Despite financial hardship, his parents ensured he remained in school and supported his enrollment in a local football academy.

Football Beginnings and Early Recognition

Although Modrić began training with a local coach, he was initially rejected by Hajduk Split due to his slight frame. However, Dinamo Zagreb recognized his potential and signed him in 2001. His dedication was evident, as he trained using wooden shin guards crafted by his father due to the family's limited resources.

Modrić was loaned to Bosnian club Zrinjski Mostar, where he thrived despite his youth. His standout performances earned him the Bosnian and Herzegovinian League Player of the Year title in his debut season. The following year, he was loaned to Inter Zaprešić, where he played a key role in securing a second-place league finish. In 2004, he was named the Croatian Football Hope of the Year—a testament to his growing reputation.

Rise at Dinamo Zagreb

In 2005, Dinamo Zagreb secured Modrić on a long-term contract. From his first season, he made a significant impact—contributing both goals and assists as the team clinched the league title. His performances helped lead the club into the UEFA Cup, further enhancing his profile as an emerging midfield talent.
