Early Broadcasting Career

Sansone's television career began at the age of 11 when she was discovered after participating in a local kids’ slam-dunk contest. Local reporter Mike Gallagher noticed her on-camera presence and invited her for an interview. This led to her becoming a young anchor for the sports show Down to Size on WJET-TV, an ABC affiliate in Erie.

By the age of 13, Maria had already conducted interviews with numerous major sports figures, including Jim Kelly, Michael Jordan, Bill Cowher, and Tommy Lasorda. Her natural interviewing talent and engaging screen presence quickly gained attention beyond her hometown station.

National Exposure and ABC Career

Soon after her early success at WJET-TV, Sansone was noticed by ABC network producers. She went on to become a sideline reporter and co-host for ABC Sports, gaining national exposure as one of the youngest talents in network television history. Her rapid rise in the industry earned her the distinction of being called the “Youngest Reporter in the History of Network Television.”

In December 1992, she appeared as a guest on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, increasing her national visibility. She later hosted Wide World of Sports for Kids, covering major sports events such as the U.S. Figure Skating Championships and the Kentucky Derby. She also co-hosted Gladiators 2000 alongside Ryan Seacrest, further building her reputation as a promising young broadcaster.

Education and Professional Development

Despite her early career success, Sansone remained committed to her education. She attended Villa Maria Academy in Erie before enrolling at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. She graduated with a degree in Communications and Political Science, equipping her with skills that would support her long-term career in media.
