Early Life and Education

Mark Addy was born on January 14, 1964, in the Tang Hall area of York, Yorkshire, England. He spent his formative years in York, where he also completed his primary and secondary education. His family's roots in the area trace back to the early 20th century. Addy's father worked as a glazier at York Minster, one of the region’s most historic landmarks. From 1982 to 1984, Addy trained in acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London, laying the foundation for his professional career.

Television Career

Addy's television career began in 1987 with a role in the series The Ritz. He went on to appear in various popular British series including A Very Peculiar Practice and The Bill, where he portrayed Matthew Holden in two episodes. His role as Detective Constable Gary Boyle in the sitcom The Thin Blue Line (1995–1996) marked one of his early successes, earning him national recognition in the UK.

Internationally, Addy reached new heights of fame with his performance as King Robert Baratheon in the first season of the epic fantasy series Game of Thrones (2011). Though his character's role concluded in the first season, the performance remains one of his most iconic portrayals.
