Mark McGrath was born in 1968 in Hartford, Connecticut. At the age of eight, his family relocated to Newport Beach, California. He later attended the University of Southern California, where he began developing his interest in music.
While still a student at USC, McGrath formed a band with friends from his high school in Newport Beach. Initially named Shrinky Dinks, the group was later renamed Sugar Ray. In 1994, Sugar Ray signed with Atlantic Records and gained mainstream success in 1997 with the hit single "Fly." This track propelled both the band and McGrath to national fame.
Following the success of "Fly," McGrath’s popularity grew considerably. His image graced the covers of various national magazines, including Rolling Stone and Spin. He also made frequent appearances on pop culture television networks like VH1 and MTV. In 1998, People magazine named him the "Sexiest Rocker" of the year.
McGrath transitioned into television with ease. In 2004, he became the co-host of the entertainment news program Extra, a role he earned after producers recognized his hosting talents from earlier appearances on MTV and VH1. He remained with the show until leaving to refocus on his music career. He later served as a guest judge during auditions for American Idol. In 2010, he hosted the game show Don’t Forget the Lyrics and went on to host the second season of Killer Karaoke, replacing Steve-O of Jackass fame.
