Early Life and Education

Martin Makary was born in England around 1970 and later immigrated with his family to the United States, settling in Danville, Pennsylvania. His father worked as a hematologist at Geisinger Medical Center, which played a role in shaping his early interest in medicine. Strongly influenced by his father’s medical career, Makary pursued studies in the sciences with a long-term goal of entering the healthcare field.

He completed his undergraduate education at Bucknell University, followed by earning a medical degree from Thomas Jefferson University. He subsequently obtained a Master of Public Health degree from Harvard University, concentrating on health policy. While at Harvard, Makary served as president of the student body, demonstrating early leadership and a commitment to healthcare reform.
