Education and Early Career

Calvi pursued her higher education in Syracuse, New York, where she attended the prestigious S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. She graduated magna cum laude in 1989 with a degree in broadcast journalism. In addition to her major, she completed supplementary studies in nutritional sciences.

Beginning in Broadcast Journalism

Following graduation, Calvi began her journalism career at a licensed radio station in Pomona, a village located in Rockland County, New York. She worked at WKRL-AM 910, where she served as both a news presenter and reporter. Her growing reputation soon led her to News 12 Networks, where she worked as an anchorwoman and assistant news director, further solidifying her status as a trusted local broadcaster.

Career at WCBS and CBS New York

In 2008, Mary Calvi joined WCBS, the flagship station of the CBS Television Network. As a news anchor and reporter for CBS New York, she has covered major stories both domestically and internationally. Her reporting portfolio includes exclusive coverage of the FBI’s underwater anti-terrorism team, and significant coverage of the 1993 and 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center. Calvi also traveled to Rome to report on the events following the death of Pope John Paul II. One noteworthy feature of her reporting was her assistance in locating a missing elderly woman during the widespread blackout of 2003.

Calvi’s influence also touched popular culture; archival footage of her broadcast work aired in the HBO documentary Indian Point: Imagining the Unimaginable (2004), directed by Rory Kennedy. That film examined emergency scenarios involving the Indian Point nuclear power plant and featured clips from Calvi’s time with News 12 Westchester.
