His birth name is Masayori Oka and he was born on 27th December 1974 in Tokyo, Japan. Masi's parents divorced soon after his birth when he was approximately 1 month old and hence he has never seen his father. At the age of 6 years he came to Los Angeles with his mother. He was introduced to acting at a very young age and when he was an Eight year old kid, he was seen in the game show called Child's Play.

He completed his elementary schooling at the Mirman School and in the year 1992 he finished high school from Harvard-Westlake School.
