Matt Ryan, born Matthew Thomas Ryan in 1985, is a professional American football quarterback. He is widely known by his nickname "Matty Ice." Ryan is the third of four children born to Michael and Bernice Ryan. Both of his parents are Roman Catholics of Irish descent. His uncle, John Loughery, also played quarterback for Boston College, establishing a family legacy in the sport.
Ryan attended William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he was a three-year starting quarterback. During his high school career, he received All-East honors from the Prep Football Report by Tom Lemming. As a senior, Ryan earned accolades including All-City First Team and Second-Team All-Southeastern Pennsylvania recognition for his performance.
Ryan enrolled at Boston College in 2003 and redshirted his freshman year. He made his collegiate debut that year in a game against the UMass Minutemen, completing two of three passes for 16 yards. He was named starting quarterback before the 2004 season after an injury sidelined Quinton Porter.
From 2005 to 2007, Ryan served as the starting quarterback, leading Boston College to three consecutive bowl victories. Across his college career, he compiled a 25–7 record in 32 starts and threw for over 200 yards in 15 games. He ranks third in school history for passing yards and completions. In 2005, he earned MVP honors in the MPC Computers Bowl.
In his senior season in 2007, Ryan led his team to the ACC Atlantic Division Championship and was named the ACC Player of the Year. In recognition of his collegiate accomplishments, Boston College retired his jersey in 2016.
