McLean Stevenson

McLean Stevenson was known as an American actor and comedian. He is most famous for his role as Lt. Colonel Henry Blake in the hit television series M*A*S*H. His great job earned him a Golden Globe Award in 1974.

Background

Edgar McLean Stevenson Jr. was born on November 14, 1927 in Normal, Illinois. His father was employed as a cardiologist. McLean served in the Navy after leaving high school. He then attended Northwestern University and got his bachelor's degree in theater arts.

On February 15, 1996, McLean passed away due to a heart attack in Los Angeles, California.

Career

Stevenson started out his entertainment career with many different jobs. He was a great host at a radio station, played a clown on a live television show in Dallas. He also sold insurance and medical equipment to make a living while he was trying to find acting gigs.

He worked in night clubs and comedy cabarets during the 1960s. When he finally made the trek to Hollywood, he worked as a comedy writer for Tom Smothers. McLean eventually began acting in comedy sketches that helped him develop his acting skills.

He finally made it big when he got the role as a fumbling commanding officer named Lt. Colonel Henry Blake, on the CBS television series, M*A*S*H in 1972.
